Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança
The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, located in Abrunhosa, in the parish of São Miguel de Vila Boa, municipality of Sátão, is a remarkable example of Portuguese religious heritage, classified as a Property of Public Interest since 2002. Built in the 18th century, it features an impressive Joanine Baroque style and stands out for the artistic richness of its interior. The Mannerist simplicity of the exterior façade, painted white and framed with granite, contrasts with the splendor of the gilded woodcarving, the blue-and-white figurative tiles, and the paintings that completely cover the interior space. Its pipe organ, built by the master organ maker Francisco António Solha, is also classified as a Property of Public Interest. Commissioned by Canon Luís Bandeira Galvão, this chapel is considered a true artistic jewel and an important testimony of faith and culture in the region.
Trabulo River Beach
Trabulo River Beach, hidden among the pine forests of the parishes of Ferreira de Aves, Romãs, Decermilo and Vila Longa, is one of the most charming natural spots in the municipality of Sátão. With its crystal-clear waters and stunning green surroundings, it offers the perfect setting to relax and enjoy nature. This well-maintained area provides excellent facilities, including a bar, restrooms, picnic area, children’s splash area, playground, and lifeguard supervision. Integrated into a rural and authentic environment, Trabulo River Beach values the historical, cultural, gastronomic, and natural heritage of the municipality, making it one of the region’s main tourist attractions.
Sanctuary of Nosso Senhor dos Caminhos
The Sanctuary of Nosso Senhor dos Caminhos, located in Rãs, in the parish of Romãs, Decermilo and Vila Longa, on the left bank of the Vouga River, is one of the most emblematic places of devotion and pilgrimage in the municipality of Sátão. Built in the early 19th century, it stands out for its grand chapel and imposing bell tower overlooking the surrounding landscape. Beside the chapel is a unique set of 15 columns, surrounded by mystery and tradition, which according to popular belief once supported a roof used as a resting place for pilgrims and for displaying the processional platforms during the pilgrimage festivities. Historically connected to the pilgrimage routes leading to Nossa Senhora da Lapa and Santiago de Compostela, the sanctuary preserves a strong religious and cultural tradition, hosting one of the region’s largest pilgrimages and remaining an important spiritual and tourist landmark.
Convent of Senhor Santo Cristo da Fraga
The Convent of Senhor Santo Cristo da Fraga, classified as a site of public interest, is one of the most emblematic historical and religious landmarks in the municipality of Sátão. Built at the end of the 18th century, it stands on the southeastern slope of Serra da Fraga, on the site where, according to tradition, a miraculous image of the crucified Christ was discovered. Today, the church and the ruins of the former convent still remain, highlighting the impressive façade and the beautiful interior altarpieces in Baroque, Rococo, and Revivalist gilded woodcarving. This site also preserves the tomb of Friar Joaquim de Santa Rosa de Viterbo, a renowned scholar and author of the “Elucidário”, who lived and wrote some of his most important works here.
Convent of Santa Eufémia
The Convent of Santa Eufémia, founded in the year 1111, is one of the most important examples of the religious and historical heritage of the municipality of Sátão. Located between Veiga and Vila Boa, beside a small stream and near the former Hermitage of Santa Eufémia, this cloistered convent housed Benedictine nuns and was originally a community of hermits until 1136. Its architecture combines Romanesque-Gothic, Mannerist, and Baroque elements, highlighting the longitudinal church with a single nave, chancel, sacristy, choirs, belvedere, and several historic dependencies. The interior is entirely covered with magnificent 17th-century polychrome carpet tiles, comparable to those found in important Portuguese monuments, and enriched by four beautiful gilded woodcarving tribunes, making this convent a true artistic and spiritual jewel of the region.
Sanctuary of Nosso Senhor da Agonia
The Sanctuary of Nosso Senhor da Agonia, located on the outskirts of Avelal, is one of the most unique and symbolic religious heritage sites in the municipality of Sátão. Built into a massive natural rock, beneath which the altar is located, this sanctuary offers impressive views over the Vouga River, Ferreira de Aves, and Nossa Senhora da Lapa. Its origin is surrounded by an ancient legend that tells the story of a knight fleeing from thieves who, as he approached a cliff, invoked “Nosso Senhor da Agonia” and was miraculously saved. According to tradition, it was at that very spot that the image of Nosso Senhor da Agonia appeared beneath the rock. This place of devotion and spirituality preserves the memory of that story and remains an important religious, cultural, and tourist landmark in the region.
Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is a place of devotion and religious heritage in the municipality of Sátão. Located in a beautiful natural setting, this 18th-century temple stands out for its typically Baroque architecture built in dressed stone. The richly decorated façade features shell-shaped ornaments that create a sense of movement and grandeur. Inside, visitors can admire a magnificent national Baroque altarpiece housing the image of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, also representative of this artistic style. The sanctuary hosts an important religious celebration held on the first Sunday after Easter and is home to the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres. Surrounding the sanctuary, visitors can enjoy a pleasant leisure park with benches, tables, and a stone cross located in front of the chapel.
Naïf Painting Museum
The Naïf Painting Museum, located in the village of Pedrosas in the municipality of Sátão, is a cultural space dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of naïf art. Housed in a building donated to the Municipality of Sátão by Hermínio Ferreira, an economist and banker who passed away in 2019, the museum brings together an important collection of national and international works of this artistic genre. Naïf art is characterized by the simplicity, spontaneity, and authenticity of its representations, created by artists without formal academic training. The collection, originating from the donation made by Hermínio Sousa, is permanently exhibited and represents one of the most diverse collections of Naïf Art, making the Naïf Painting Museum an important cultural and artistic center in the region.
Sanctuary of Senhora do Barrocal
The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Barrocal, located in Romãs, in the municipality of Sátão, is a unique place where religious heritage, archaeology, nature, and tradition come together. Situated among large granite rock formations overlooking a vast valley, this site hosts the celebration in honor of Nossa Senhora das Candeias on February 2nd, as well as the festivities of Saint Blaise. The surrounding area reveals important archaeological remains of a 10th-century settlement, including stone walls, rock-carved graves, seeds, bones, and Muslim ceramic pieces, testifying to the historical importance of the site and possible contacts with Al-Andalus. Surrounded by legends such as the “Lapa da Moira” and the “Footprints of the Little Donkey,” the sanctuary attracts pilgrims, visitors, and lovers of history and nature, establishing itself as one of the most fascinating cultural and spiritual landmarks in the region.
